Look up as well as down

Check changes in shape
Railing bases, service pipes, projecting beams and stepped walls interrupt a straight border. Photograph those junctions from inside. The finishing detail should close the intended opening without creating loose folds, protruding ends or a hidden gap behind the point where the net appears to meet the wall.

Assess the window with its sash open
Show the open sash, its full movement and the accessible sill.
Sliding and outward-opening windows
Record which panels open and where the proposed net or screen could attach. Include cleaning access and any existing insect screen. A pet barrier should work with the operating window, not require a family member to detach it each time they need fresh air.
Tilted windows and ledges
A tilt-open window can create a trapping gap as well as an escape route. Keep that opening inaccessible until an appropriate solution is fitted. Show any shelf or furniture that lets the pet reach it, and include the external ledge when describing the window's shape.
Keep the home usable

Retain structural guarding and review what makes the balcony edge reachable.
Furniture and stored items
Identify chairs, tables, planters and storage boxes that become steps toward the railing or net. Discuss their intended positions before fitting. Creating a comfortable place for the pet away from the edge is useful, but it should not become a climbing route to an unfinished upper opening.
Laundry and household access
Show clothes-drying rods, doors and the route to the washing machine. Avoid a plan that repeatedly pushes laundry or furniture into the mesh. Pet containment also does not address every household hazard, so supervise use and keep unsuitable plants, loose cords and other accessible hazards out of reach.

Show the actual wall or metalwork that will support the net.
Assess the surface
Include wall condition, metalwork, old hooks and any restricted drilling area. A previously fitted bird net or decorative grille does not establish suitability for this pet. If the border needs repair or an additional frame, that work should be identified before the net specification is finalised.
Agree finish and restrictions
For rented homes and managed buildings, check the proposed fixing and appearance with the relevant owner or manager. Bring those conditions to the assessment. Material colour, mesh visibility and permitted mounting points can then be compared without promising that every balcony accepts the same fitting method.

Keep pets indoors during work
Use a closed internal room or another secure area while installers or service staff work. Restore the enclosure after the job and inspect the closure before allowing pets back. A panel that looks shut from the doorway may still have an unfinished lower or side edge.

Patch, replace or change the barrier
